In Vitro
Fertilization
IVF or In Vitro Fertilization is a medical process by which an
egg is fertilized by sperm, outside of the body. IVF is a major treatment that
people consider when they are having trouble conceiving even after other
methods of assisted reproductive technology failed. IVF is done by monitoring a
woman’s ovulatory process, and removing the ovum from the woman’s ovaries and
letting sperm fertilise them in fluid medium. After the ovum is fertilized by
the sperm, the zygote is transferred to the woman’s uterus with the intention
of establishing a pregnancy.

IVF: For
some a medical miracle, for others heartbreak
Mrs. Alvarez and her husband have been trying to conceive a
child for seven years but have had no success. They spent the first four years
in the Philippines where doctors were unwilling to suggest IVF. The doctors were
reluctant to IVF because they approved of the traditional and natural ways of
conceiving. They doctors also felt that Mrs. Alvarez was still too young for
IVF and that there was still hope for her to conceive.
At the age of 38 Mrs. Alvarez was given medication and vitamins
to boost her ovulation. However, with all the medication and vitamins and
procedures that Mrs. Alvarez went through, she was still unable to
conceive.
Finally, her doctor recommended IVF and with the approval of her
husband Harold’s support, Mrs. Alvarez took the IVF procedure. After one cycle
of IVF, Mrs. Alvarez became pregnant. The couple spent Dh30 000 but Mrs. Alvarez
said that there was no better way to spend the money.
Fatima and Jayson Beltran tried to conceive for almost eight
years. The couple says that they spent more than half of they had on IVF alone.
After working for two consecutive years with no time off, Mr. Beltran was able
to save for the procedure and after one IVF trial, Mrs. Beltran gave birth to
twins, Ethan and Kyle.
Not all couples were as lucky as the Alvarez and Beltran family.
After an ectopic pregnancy and two failed attempts at IVF, a Sudanese woman
named Umm Ahmad was unable to afford a third cycle. This woman and her husband
borrowed a loan from the National Bank of Abu Dubai and had no way of paying it
back. The woman and her husband had no way of paying back the loan that they had
to resort to charity.
Credibilty
I think that the article, “IVF: For some a medical miracle, for
others a heartbreak” is credible and reliable. I can tell that the article is
credible because I found it on the website The National which is very
well-known. I also know that this article is credible because I know that the
writer of the article, Manal Ismal has written many other articles for The
National.
Bias
After reading my article, I think that it was unbiased. I think
that the article was unbiased because the article wasn’t only about the
successes of IVF but it also included some unsuccessful stories after IVF. Even
in the title it did not side whether or not IVF was a good thing or a bad
thing. The title is saying that IVF for some is a miracle for some a heartbreak
because after reading the article you will learn about some lucky and some
unlucky couples that went through IVF trials or procedures.
